Coming from Rothesay Isle of Bute
I know Lena's family. I only remember Lena as a wee girl who left the Island for fame on the mainland. This was one big step for her which many people dont appreciate coming from a small community to venture into the big lights of our cities. Her mum and dad Hilda and Victor like all of us were so proud of her.
Lena however lives on in Rothesay through her cousin Margaret who sings and entertains our many visitors throughout the summer season. Margaret runs a cafe by day selling the best icecream in the UK....Zavaroni's of course and sings by night. I look on her as one of my best friends from the Island. Many stories I cannot share here but Margaret has many stories which reduce us to tears with laughter. There was so much that was good in Lena's life and this is what I want us all to remember.
When I go back home Friday night has to be in the Taverna where Margaret sings. Your will be able to see video's of Margaret singing on Andrews page.
Sadly there are many people out there who have said cruel and vindictive things against Lena's family since Lena's passing. All I say is speak to those who know.
In the Heritage Centre in Rothesay there is a statue in memory of our "wee lass". Go on the Isle of Bute web site to view it. It is the Islands farewell to her. Lena's spirit lives on there (by the way we dont want Margaret to give up on her singing) as long as the name Zavaroni is heard and seen.
Lastly, I now live in Barry South Wales. Lena passed away only ten miles from me in Cardiff. She didnt know it but a little piece of Rothesay was down here for her.
